XP reinstall and a link...

Your Computerokay... my main computer, the computer I use for all my heavy lifting and game playing (when I used to play games) got all f'd up a few days back. I hadn't restarted it for over a month and a recent Windows Security Update told me I needed to reboot for the update to take effect. damn it. It seems that somehow my "C:\Windows\system32" directory got corrupted and wouldn't let XP boot.

This really pissed me off as prior to this reboot everything was running smoothly, there were no wierd errors, and programs were opening fast and generally behaving well. I reinstalled XP last night and during the install, I was told that several other files/directories on my drive had gone bad. This is a fairly new drive and I use it quite a bit. As I said before, I have never had any hiccups that would suggest a bad drive. Most of my important data (music and pics) is on a separate backup drive (thank god).

Kellie was asking what I did to make the computer blowup and I really didn't know what to say... I really hope this is just another case of XP shenanigans and not a bad drive, but only time will tell.

It's actually kind of funny that this all happened as it made me look a bit harder at reinstalling debian as my main OS. Debian used to be my main OS, but life got in the way. I didn't really have the time to play around and get it all setup the way I needed so I abandonded it. I definitely don't have time to be playing around right now (same reason as before), but I figure with XP running on the other partition as a dual-boot I can always switch back and forth until I have it setup to my needs.

Researching Debian and the current state of ATI video card support (which, sadly, is still nearly non-existant) I saw the following link in this blog post:

This link made me think of Kellie's question on what caused my machine to explode... maybe it was cruft.
